The Higher Education Students’ Loans and Grants Board (HESLGB) offers loans to Malawian needy and deserving students pursuing undergraduate degrees or advanced diplomas.1 You can apply for tuition fees loans, upkeep loans, or both categories combined.1

Loan types

HESLGB provides two categories of student loans.1 You can apply for a tuition fees loan, an upkeep loan, or a combination of both.1

Who can apply

HESLGB loans are available to Malawian needy and deserving students who are pursuing undergraduate degrees or advanced diplomas at accredited higher education institutions.1

How to check if you are approved

Provisionally approved beneficiary lists are available from the offices of your institution’s Registrar or Dean of Students Affairs, and on the HESLGB website at www.heslgb.mw.24 If your institution has posted the approved list on notice boards, you can also check there.2

Vetting and bonding

Once approved, you will be subjected to a vetting and bonding process jointly carried out by HESLGB and your higher education institution’s administrators.2

Loan repayment

All loans are due for repayment two years after you complete or leave your studies, whether you graduate or are withdrawn from college.1 After this two-year period, you must commence repayment directly to HESLGB or make arrangements with your employer on the mode of repayment.1 Your employer is legally required to make monthly deductions from your salary and remit them to HESLGB within fifteen days.1
