- You make one application covering all public universities instead of applying to each separately, paying a single fee of K10,0002
- Each public university's Selection Committee makes its own admission decisions, guided by the university's institutional Acts1
- NCHE coordinates the overall process by organizing a Technical Working Group that sets a calendar of events with timelines for application calls, data entry, selection and result release3

To apply to Malawi’s public universities, you submit one application through the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) harmonised selection system. This single application covers all the public universities and costs K10,000 in total, rather than requiring separate applications to each institution.2
How the selection works
NCHE does not select students itself. Instead, each public university selects its own students through a Selection Committee, following its institutional Acts.1 NCHE’s role is to coordinate this process by bringing together representatives from all public universities in a Technical Working Group (TWG).1 The TWG develops a calendar of events that sets out the timeline for all stages: submission of programmes by universities, the application call, data entry, selection, and result release.3
The application process timeline
The calendar of events determines when you can apply and when results will be released.3 After applications close, each university’s Selection Committee reviews applications independently, and their selection lists are then harmonized by NCHE.2 The selection lists must be approved by each university’s Council before results are released.3 Results are released after this approval process is complete.3
Why this system matters
The harmonised selection means you no longer need to apply separately to each university and pay multiple fees.2 Instead of spending K5,000 on average per application (which would total K20,000 for all four universities), you pay one K10,000 fee.2 This makes it easier and more affordable for students to access higher education.3
